Introduction by Kurt W Foster
Few people today would not share the sense that we are living in times of great changes, of profound shifts in almost every discipline. In the field of architecture, these have taken on such a breadth and depth as to suggest the advent of a new era. The signs of these new times can be found dotted around everywhere and we have sought to collect them together to provide a world-wide survey under the concept of METAMORPH .
There are various reasons for this transformation, but even more numerous are the consequences: architecture is going through a period of revolutionary shifts in thought that have already opened up unexpected new perspectives. We intend to reveal these in this year's Biennale. Apart from the pavilions of the various nations and the spaces reserved for other countries and groups interested in participating - especially those countries that have just joined the European Union today - the Biennale will make use of nearby venues to host the Cities on Water section (on a floating structure in the Arsenale basin), with Rinio Bruttomesso as curator, and a group of architecture schools from six nations. The two main Biennale sites - the Italian Pavilion and the Corderie dell'Arsenale - offer the possibility of splitting the exhibition into two contrasting tempos and rhythms. I would like to present a brief overview of these two readings of a single subject, that of METAMORPHOSIS in present-day architecture.
We will open the Italian Pavilion as a theatre of experiences, while inviting visitors to follow us in the immense space of the Corderie as though reliving recent history. The Pavilion and Corderie will form two poles of the same argument, offering readings and experiences that complement each other, and making space for reflection and beauty.
In order to connect to a public beyond the city of Venice, Rai Radio3's programme, "Era urbana", will host events, meetings and interviews during the vernissage. And to ensure a long-lasting memory of the 9th Architecture Biennale, we have redesigned the catalogue, which will now comprise three volumes: one of essays on the subject, one on the many vectors in the field of architecture, and a third volume acting as guide to the exhibition.
I was not able to improve the Gardens or the conditions of the Arsenale, both languishing whilst awaiting operations of conservation and, let us not forget it, innovation. Walking towards the Italian Pavilion, we will be struck by the zigzag of a bolt of lightning, periodically lit up by strobe lights, the unpredictable sign of "force majeure". We step into the Italian Pavilion and refresh the senses in the octagonal room, once the only part to have been built, and the only element with a precise architectural character. We immerse ourselves in the slow panoramic films of photographer Armin Linke , who will make us feel Alpine air, cool from the glaciers and the mist boiling up from the valleys. It is indeed water, the first cradle and ultimate benediction of life, that daily recalls the incessant metamorphosis of all that lives.
He who lives among men lives somewhere. Living on the earth and creating lairs and dens forms a link between us and the world of animals, but we are separated by the conscious and always different character of the style of living. The rooms to the west of the Italian Pavilion will host NEWS FROM THE INTERIOR , a section dedicated to Italian interiors of recent years which has Mirko Zardini as curator. We have come a long way now from the times of the famous New York show, "Domestic Landscape", which caused a furore with an almost alternative but profitable culture of lamps, little sofas and furnishings; today, instead, it is shop designs of all types that dominate, temporary homes, and many new ambivalent spaces for work, after-work and entertainment.
Exiting towards the canal, almost turning between interior and exterior, we retrace our steps across a space that brusquely brings us up short with an "exterior" on a historic scale: the transformation of Berlin after the fall of the Wall. A balanced but overwhelming vision by photographer Giovanni Chiaramonte .
Whilst ruin and novelty continue to vie for power in Berlin, in the following rooms, to be designed by two equalling contrasting architects, this theme of destruction and construction, ambition and defeat form the prelude to other inflections concerning the great subject of metamorphosis.
We can say little as yet about these ephemeral constructions - and we hope that this is what they will be, and not "layouts". Peter Eisenman will meditate on his work as Piranesi used to contemplate his beneath sham ruins of ancient Rome, and Massimo Scolari will explain the worrying presence of the bolt of lightning on the roof of the Pavilion as the sign of destruction of the Tower of Babel. Items of an enigmatic nature - an archaic wooden construction with a steel nucleus - will stimulate some curiosity through the disturbing beauty of disaster. As in the evolution of nature, that of recent architecture is also marked by losses and desolation. Wherever something truly new appears, something else vanishes. Metamorphosis has its price, but it also has its new protagonists and, I'm sure, a great future.
Returning to the thread of the parallel venues, we will enter the CONCERT HALLS section: starting with three works of epochal importance. We will then follow the recent inventions of about 40 concert halls around the world. Everything derives from a single "sacred prodigy", the Berlin Philharmonie, designed by Hans Scharoun. Criticised in the mid-20th century for its misleading expressionism, the Philharmonie instead proved to be a fundamental step in the development of modern concert halls. Another cornerstone in terms of innovation and technique was a building by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis, who created the Phillips Pavillion for the Brussels World Expo. The third point of reference is Jøern Utzon's work in Sydney. A room that consciously embraces all three positions and goes beyond them with great vitality is Frank Gehry's Disney Concert Hall. This is a work that sums up the history of the entire category. The 14 years that have passed in this (might we say Italian?) affair since the initial competition and the inauguration last year have ensured that the Disney Hall has become a sort of summa summarum of the entire evolution of concert halls.
We now draw closer to the phenomenal rebirth of a type of building that after slumbering for half a century, comes to life in given moments and appears on a scale that provides food for thought. Almost always conceived as an improbable union between two contrasting expectations, that is as urban destination and cavernous space on the scale of the landscape, concert halls are always contradictory because of their complex nature. But it is thanks to these contradictions that they underwent an astonishing development. Another reason brings them to the fore: the architecture of concert halls has been perfected in technical terms but it also transcends its autonomy, overcoming its own limits and gaining a further quality, that of atmosphere. The concert halls not only protect the indispensable social gathering around one of humanity's most complex and beautiful activities, making music, but also accord in every sense of the term with this society. To a large extent, this "temperature" of the space immediately stands out and is an "incalculable" aspect of architecture, which in this way escapes a constricting definition, culminating instead in an eternal desire: the human desire of being gathered and protected by invisible forces.
Logically, the Concert Hall section leads on to the theme of ATMOSPHERE and so requires a particular installation to give way to a major contribution from photography. We will come across the theme of atmosphere again in the Corderie, but in the Italian Pavilion it will manifest its insidious, impalpable quality in two spaces designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and his Spanish counterpart Juan Navarro Baldeweg . Between them will flourish a photographic survey under the auspices of Nanni Baltzer . This selection of photographs follows the progressive change in the role of photography vis-à-vis architecture, tracing the shift from documentary instrument to phenomenological one. It can be no surprise that weather phenomena - day and night, clouds and reflections - lie at the heart of this section and are in this way intimately associated with the general theme. And it is no surprise also that the close relationship between photography and architecture is changing in such a way as to make of photography an art and for this very reason a source of ideas and suggestions for architects.
The Italian Pavilion ends with some rooms that are almost like a workshop, in which architects like Chris Wilkinson and Ben van Berkel will show us how one arrives at a world of new forms, of innovative techniques and inventions that are revolutionising architecture. Taking an unaccustomed exit into the atrium of the Pavilion, we return to the setting of "natural metamorphoses" (images by Armin Linke), before leaving the Giardini for the Arsenale.
Arrived at the Corderie , we wished to compare the fixed, uniform space and its deep perspective with a topical concept of spatialism, one associated on the one hand to the body, to the parallax of the gaze, and on the other to the movement and sense of forces more powerful than a one-eyed view. To this end, I called the studio Asymptote (Hani Rashid and LiseAnne Couture) to create a true layout for this year's Biennale. The work of Asymptote, with the participation of Omnivore 's graphic designers, involves every aspect of signposting, layout, graphic design, posters and books and catalogue. The extended itinerary of the Corderie will offer an almost physical experience of the contrasting of a fixed perspective with a dynamic vision of space as the true substance of architecture.
We first enter a square space where we present a brief summary of the situation at the outset: for a moment, we go back to 1980 when the Corderie were for the first time used by the architecture Biennale, directed by Paolo Portoghesi. On this occasion, post-modernism was celebrated. Instead of conceiving this "liaison dangereuse" with what is now a truly historical past as the threshold to an epoch, we propose a different interpretation which examines the 1980s from the point of view of four pivotal figures: Peter Eisenman and Frank Gehry on the one hand, Aldo Rossi and James Stirling on the other. Two of the four are now set within that history from which a future was expected - and which failed to materialise - while the other two, Eisenman and Gehry, have become the true protagonists of that architecture that was slowly but inexorably taking form over the last decades. How it happened and on what theorems it was based are explored in the Corderie. This area is divided into four sections, as required for any good symphony: first TOPOGRAPHY , then SURFACES , which are so vital for the creation of ATMOSPHERE , and finally the HYPER-PROJECTS that exploit the new acquisitions of the latest architecture to the full.
Every transformation has its precursors and explorers. In just a few steps, we will embrace a series of TRANSFORMATIONS of existing buildings and locations, as transformations of the elements and theorems of current architecture. Through analytical exercises, Dagmar Richter transforms a basic concept of building, as in the case of Le Corbusier's Casa Domino, while Greg Lynn applies his practice of continuous transformation to a residential building in Amsterdam, and Michele Saee on the Drugstore in Paris, both developed on a computer before being applied to the physical reality. It is the relationship between concept and new processes of building that highlights the choice of materials and their effects. Thanks to the infinite possibilities of the materials, architecture takes on a more powerful presence and one that is far more subtle than in the 20th century. However, from subtlety, one must pass to broader dimensions.
The new geography embraces the "bits" of computer technology as much as large spaces. Numerous projects stand out from their predecessors for this reason: the old dialectic between building and site gives way to an interlacement of both categories. Nowadays, many buildings take on a topographical character, assuming geological or historical features from their locations, or extending themselves, by orientation and reference, potentially far beyond their sites. Not only in obvious cases such as that of the Botanical gardens of Barcelona ( Carlos Ferrater ), or the proposal to redevelop a hillside and quarry in the Mediterranean port of Denia ( Vincente Guallart ), but also in such different buildings as the Paul Klee Museum by Renzo Piano at Berne, the Santa Caterina Market - also in Barcelona - by Mirailles-Tagliabue , and the Ciudad de Cultura in Santiago de Compostela by Peter Eisenman. All share this topographical quality. The earth itself seems to move and blend with a series of structures recalling a building technique that seems now to be taken for granted. This blending of the location and building appears in a new form of architecture that finds its complete "incarnation" on recent constructions. In Zaha Hadid 's Science Center at Wolfsburg, the doubly curving surfaces already announced the new geometries and complex spatialism of this genre. The geometric complexity follows in the tracks of 20th-century science which, as is noted, began with the idea of curved space (from Minkovski to Einstein), and which takes into account how, in turn, the ovoidal curvature of the planets and hyperbolic profiles of a Borromini reflected the cosmography of the baroque period.
Numerous recent project are based no longer on the millenary dialectic of supports and weights, but on continuous surfaces, be they folded or curved. In every case, the architecture of Vitruvian origin gives way to one of stepped continuity, as prophesied by Frederick Kiesler between the wars when he asked that the "separation between floor, walls, pilasters and roof be separated. Instead, a flow connects them. The structural solution might be called: conversion of the compression into continuous tension". A recent phenomenon that in terms of quantity and inventiveness makes itself noted is that of curved surfaces. We are not speaking here only of forms tending towards the ovoidal, but of continuous curves in three dimensions. The Moebius tape and the Klein bottle constitute key theorems, and it is no coincidence that they frequently emerged during the 1990s ( UN Studio , Moebius House). After these experiments on the scale of objects, as in the case of the artificial island by Vito Acconci at Graz, large-scale projects, like the Eye Beam school by Diller&Scofidio in New York, proved to be a little less programmatic. Profoundly linked to the concept of continuous movement, to flow and inflection, continuous surfaces triumphed in projects for new car centres and skyscrapers ( SOM , Hotel Tower in China). When the band surfaces are twisted, solutions such as that by Wilkinson-Eyre emerge, linking two buildings in London. What strikes one is not just the expression of rigidity thus achieved, but also the play of double movement that is generated by the form.
These examples show us to what extent their conception and realisation depended on the use of computer technology. Speaking of this sort of project, I would like to make a more general observation. Computer technology is the new life blood of all the operating systems of our world. In architecture, the use of these technologies is slowly linking up the various skills required in our discipline. We can now begin to discern a near future in which it will be possible to control all the conceptual aspects and executive phases of an architectural work with a single instrument, the computer. But note this: we do not at all believe that this will result in a "computer-generated" architecture. On the contrary, we are convinced that computer technology can unleash the imagination and potential to build beyond the limits tacitly accepted and ideologically justified hitherto.
I would like to return to the Corderie itinerary, and more precisely to the theme of ATMOSPHERE as already announced in the Italian Pavilion. At this point in the Corderie, the theme will spread through a series of buildings giving life to the metabolic dimension. From the natural changes that change their character so much to the special effects that have broadened the range of possibilities. In this sector, it will be photography and some prototypes that will compare the technical potential and varying effects. Nowadays, the buildings paving the way are those playing on the infinite variables of their appearances as much as on the image of their presumed functionality - and let us admit that image has had its part to play in the ideology of functionalism: Ten Arquitectos in Mexico City, Kengo Kuma and Toyo Ito in Tokyo and Alsop in Liverpool, to mention just a few examples from a choice of over 40 projects, see their buildings as living organisms rather than as fixed objects.
The greatest expression of this vitality appears in the metropolis, where new HYPER-PROJECTS are carving out the same sort of role as that of the baths in ancient Rome: buildings on the scale of their locations, buildings able to respond to the singular complexity of the activities they embrace and, finally, buildings that will soon become the symbol of life itself, and not only of their specific functions. A few years ago, the Japanese architect, Toyo Ito , built one of these topical locations in his Sendai Mediatheque, inventing social spheres and amassing them in a whole that lends itself as much to activity as to the contemplation of our life. The large library complexes and cultural centres, such as that by Mario Bellini for Turin, that in Copenhagen by Schmitt, Hammer & Lassen , or the Musée de confluence at Lyons by Coop Himmelb(l)au amplify the scale and complexity to a level almost without precedents. Banks - imposing but not colossal, such as Behnisch's State Clearing Bank at Hannover - numerous museums - Preston Scott Cohen 's project for Tel Aviv stands out - and major transport centres such as the Interchange at Arnhem by the UN Studio constitute the favoured locations of present-day imagination.
These and other projects will conclude, like in an orchestral crescendo that blends all the timbres and resonances, mixing dark and light, forte and piano, to unleash itself in an explosive finale. This finale, however, I'm sure, is nothing other than a brilliant overture. I invite you to the opening of this near future at the Biennale di Venezia.
