A competition winning scheme for the revitalisation of Bremen University.
the competition created a series of interventions into the original 1960's
masterplan. The principal element, a university entrance hall, welcomes
students, visitors and staff, in a strong modern environment.
Bremen University Masterplan & Entrance Building. Azhar
as project architect to Jan Stoermer. In 1995 Jan Stoermer was invited to
participate in the competition for the revitalisation of Bremen University
The original University masterplanned in the 1960s was in much need
of repair.
The strategy was to interweave a series of interventions,
including an entrance hall, a bookshop, a French love garden, a post office,
a tram stop etc. The flagship of the development was to build the University
Halle, a welcoming hall giving orientation, information and an identity to
the university.
This incremental approach, in effect a “shopping list”
allowed us to produce a realistic strategy which could be evaluated and
prioritized by the client and the design team
